In A Decaying California Resort Area, A Pot War Erupts

CALIFORNIA:   Transients hole up in the old cottage resorts where vacationing families once came to fish and swim. Rotted docks and pier pilings litter Clearlake’s shoreline.

Much of this city, in fact, and others nearby in Lake County, looks as if it was plucked from Appalachia — with weeds and unpaved streets, stray dogs and backyard marijuana crops.

But across the water in the county seat of Lakeport, civic and business leaders talk of bringing back tourism, of planting more vineyards instead of weed.

They are tired of the hot August stink, when every neighborhood patch is in full bloom. They are tired of the thuggish out-of-towners, the stream diversions and the violent crime.



Napa Valley, CA Medical Marijuana Backers Say They're Closer To Goal

CALIFORNIA:  Volunteers are collecting signatures in front of the Napa County Library and other public venues this week in the hope of overturning the City Council’s December decision to scrap its medical marijuana ordinance.

So far, the grassroots effort reports having collected about 3,000 signatures of registered city voters since late December, with 3,850 signatures — 10 percent of the city’s registered voters — needed by the Jan. 16 deadline. [Read more…]
