WASHINGTON: Last night, I had the pleasure of attending a special celebratory gathering of the movers and shakers of Washington’s Legal Cannabis Industry. Held at the Hard Rock Cafe, 
and hosted by Jared Mirsky, CEO and founder of cannabis digital agency Wick & Mortar, the “Movers and Shakers” celebration marked Wick & Mortar’s (originally Online Marijuana Design) fifth anniversary.  Jake the Professor made the scene in my capacity as Ambassador-At-Large for the Marijuana Business Association (MJBA).  Great work if you can get it.

Jake and HarleyThe party was a veritable Who’s Who of Industry VIPs, including the Pacific Northwest’s very own David Tran and his crew at Dope Magazine , who were celebrating their acquisition by High Times Magazine.  Other notables included JJ Walker, who runs and operates the new Cannabition Museum in Las Vegas —  home of the 24′  world’s largest functioning bong, Bongzilla, created by Jerome Baker Designs. If you are into weed go see the Cannabition Museum next time you visit Las Vegas.  

Wick & MortarThe very well known grower and author of Marijuana Growers Guide and co-founder of High Times Magazine, Ed Rosenthal was there!  Many of the old school cannabis growers used Ed’s grow guide to make decision about what new grow equipment we needed. We were assured by Ed, the next thing we needed to do for bigger buds was buy more grow equipment!

Also in attendance was the lovely Cheryl Shuman, aka the Martha Stuart of pot. Cheryl is an original cannabis branding pioneer who has inspired many of today’s cannabis influencers, and women of weed.

Tony Greenhand renowned professional joint roller (yeah, it’s a thing) dazzled the party with a turtle shaped masterfully-rolled jay.  Everything was going great until the fire alarm went off. Next thing you know, the Seattle Fire Department arrives just in time to make sure all the movers and shakers were safe.  Strange thing, nobody knows why the fire alarm malfunctioned. Weird right? Everything turned out fine of course, and like the old saying goes, “It ain’t a good party until the authorities arrive.”

I’m just back from another epic Seattle Hempfest.  The Pacific Northwest is one of the most beautiful regions on the planet, and its volcanic mountains, vibrant cities and evergreen forests never cease to inspire wonder.  I cherish my PNW canna-family, and am humbled at how rich and meaningful have been our shared experiences, as we workers in weed have toiled to reform marijuana law, and establish a legal cannabis industry.

It is a treat to spend time with legends: Farmer Tom Lauerman, Jake The Professor, Grandma Cat Jeter, Kevin and Crystal Oliver, AC Braddock and Fritz Chess, David Tran, Vivian McPeak, Joy Beckerman, Nurse Heather Manus, Ah Warner and so many others.  This year we were honored to have USVI Senator Positive Nelson, who was traveling with a video crew from 420MEDIA,  visit with us.  I first met Terence, who is universally known as ‘Positive’, at a High Tea at Seattle’s Green Labs Farms a few years back, when as moderator I had the privilege of introducing the pro-pot and “positive living” politician to the cannabis community.  Look for great things from the Senator and USVI (pot tourism anyone?) soon.

Seattle Hempfest for me has always seemed like the ‘State Fair of Weed.’  Tens of thousands of people — of every age, shape and size — streaming through a labyrinth of vendor booths, food trucks and tents, smoking weed, hanging out and listening to advocates preach to the choir, and bands sing about “Mary Jane.”  This year was no different, a little smaller — a couple fewer stages due to lack of sponsorship support — and smokier, as a result of raging fires in Canada and Eastern Washington.

At the Curved Papers/MJBA booth, and at a series of industry parties, I had the opportunity to reconnect to my industry friends and colleagues. What I heard was a consistent narrative: these are make or break times for Washington licensees.  Competition is fierce and getting fiercer.  Wholesale prices are brutally low for producers, and while sales remain strong at retail and gross revenues are high, profits are elusive and unfair taxes still eat up most of the profits.  For licensees the choice is straightforward: differentiate or die.

Much of our conversation revolved around the mainstreaming of cannabis — and the impact that the $4B USD investment that Constellation Brands just made with Canopy Growth would have on the mom & pops. The game has gone from grassroots to international overnight, and for the smaller players there is tremendous pressure to scale.  Undercapitalized businesses are putting their licenses up for sale, or looking for partnerships and mergers.

Cannafest Destiny.  The West Coast is the fertile birthplace of the legal cannabis industry.  While NORML, established in 1970, can rightfully claim authorship of the political legalization and reform movement, the business — and more importantly the community — started in California, Oregon, Washington (and British Columbia).   The legitimate markets that we have created out West have blazed bright, sparks have now inspired entrepreneurs, activists, investors and politicians across the country — from Maine to Maryland, Michigan to Oklahoma. Our duty and opportunity is now to export the incredible experience and knowledge to these new emerging markets.

In a weird wrinkle of federal prohibition, Legal Cannabis has become international, before it has become a national industry!  Our neighbors to the north are rapidly ramping up their legal cannabis industry, and positioning themselves globally with distribution deals in emerging European, Caribbean and South American markets. Public Canadian companies are gobbling up American brands, and deals are now measured in the billions.

No where can we witness the mainstreaming of marijuana better than Las Vegas.  Neon billboards on strip.  24/7 retailers with drive thru.  Las Vegas, once upon a time among the harshest places in America to be caught with a seed or a stem (an infraction that could land you 20 years in the hoosegow) now actively planning the opening of consumption lounges and canna-friendly hotels.  No peace, love and tie dye hippie culture here.  Just the business of entertainment.  It is fitting then that the next stop for the Cannafest Destiny tour will be Las Vegas Hempfest on November 3&4th — Viva Las Hempfest! Hope to see you there!

Justin Costillo is a local Seattle Hedge fund manager for GRN Funds.  He and Alejandro Cantos of Diego Pellicer began a discussion over dinner about the future of the cannabis industry. The conversation focused on setting new, higher standards for the consumer.  Alejandro Cantos, an entrepreneur and owner of Diego Pellicer, shared his goals and visions to create the world’s most luxurious cannabis shopping experience.

“Affordable Luxury” is the brand Alejandro aspires to create. The gentlemen crafted a plan to expedite the process. Justin Costillo decided he would purchase the most luxurious cannabis product ever produced. Forever securing his place in history as the first and only person to acquire the $10,000 El Dorado (see my previous column here).  This one-of-a-kind, handcrafted cannabis cigar could only be purchased from the most luxurious cannabis retailer in Seattle, Diego Pellicer.

On June 18th 2018 at 4:20, in a penthouse on 2ed Ave in Seattle Washington, the 24K Gold Leaf El Dorado was carefully removed from its humidor (generously included in the $10,000 price , along with a fancy lighter and cigar cutter) The El Dorado is a full ounce of premium Goldleaf Gardens cannabis, wrapped in a thin layer of Polar Extracts premium Rosin.  The 7-inch long El Dorado was removed from its protective wax-sealed glass tube. It was closely admired by those of us that who had the good fortune to be present. The new owner then lit his new fancy cigar lighter and began to gently “roast” the very tip of the El Dorado before we all shared in this truly historic cannabis moment. 

We all were very aware what a truly special occasion this was. After all, when does the guy who sold you the weed get to smoke it with you? Unheard of, but there we were! Each of us with a look that said, ‘Can you believe we are smoking a $10,000 cigar?’

The Professors favorite protege, Harley aka @imfamousprude, picks up what I drop:  On that hot June day on the 39th Floor of a penthouse suite cannabis history was made and then smoked. I know, I was there. 

There is an argument that can be made about the ostentatious display of wealth and influence this item portrays. I understand. I also understand the passion and vision of Alejandro Cantos and Ariel Payopay. The both said they wanted to offer the very finest luxury experience in the cannabis market.  I say with the creation of the El Dorado and subsequent sale of this one of a kind product by Diego Pellicer, this is by far the best and most luxurious cannabis product ever produced. History was indeed made.

I work with cannabis users every day in my role at Diego Pellicer.  I often meet customers who come into the store looking for the highest concentration of THC for the lowest price.  It is my duty to explain to them why 31% THC may not be their most important consideration.   Cannabis today is so much more than Indica and Sativa, I tell them.  There are many other components of the plant to consider when using cannabis.

It is especially important for those of us professionals in the emerging legal cannabis industry to better to understand the complexities of the cannabis plant.

There is so much to learn about Terpenes that entrepreneur Amanda Mac founded Seattles Terp School.   Her mission was to create a place to share knowledge about our favorite plant, in a very cannabis-friendly environment.  As MJBA’s Ambassador-At-Large, I am committed to supporting cannabis education, and to working with like-minded industry professionals to establish best practices, and so I was delighted to serve as master of ceremonies for the venue’s first workshop on June 7th at Heylo Extracts in Seattle SODO.

Featured speakers at this first workshop included Daniel Luebke, Heylo, who predicted that today’s Sativa and Indica labels will soon be replaced with more comprehensive terpene profiles, and Cannabinder co-founder Tom Heller, who detailed the database of such profiles his company is building.  Other presenters included GreenWay’s Ben Cassiday,  Confidence Analytics’ Nick Mosely and Wick & Mortar’s Jared Mirsky.

Among the highlights: We learned that there are some 30,000 different Terpenes that have been identified. And more than 130 terpenes have been identified in Cannabis alone!

It was not too long ago when something like the El Dorado could not even be dreamed of in our wildest stoner fantasies.  Back in the day, when we wanted to roll a special “cigar,” we would use a couple of yellow Zig-Zag wheat straw rolling papers stuck together. In 1972, as an 8th Grader at Kempsville Jr. High, I was introduced to my first nickel bag of weed. I scored it from a classmate’s older brother. The pot I purchased was a combination of Mexican “brick weed” with a fair amount of oregano probably mixed in. Yes, oregano! It’s not just folklore.

Mexican Brick weed — with plenty of seeds and sticks and stems included — was the most common type of marijuana you would see back in those days. In addition to its poor quality, our weed may or may not have been sprayed with Paraquat, the very poisonous non-selective herbicide the federal government used to kill pot fields in Mexico in an attempt to eradicate marijuana before it got imported to the states. Mexican farmers would harvest the weed and sell it anyway, and so that sometimes made it into our baggies as well. It may have contained toxins, but at least the weed back then was cheap. You could buy a one-finger “nickel bag” for 5 bucks or a two-finger “dime bag” for a ten spot. There was something called a “lid” for $15 – three-fingers inside your folded over Glad sandwich bag.

Early on we didn’t really know or understand the proper botanical names like cannabis Indica or Cannabis Sativa. We only concerned ourselves with amount of seeds and the earthy smell we quickly began to relate to how stoned it made us. We would occasionally get access to better strains — Acapulco Gold or Panama Red — and after a few years, the market started to see the appearance of pot that came from Columbia. This South American iconic weed could be purchased for $35 per ounce — pretty expensive at that time, but most people agreed it was worth it.

Columbian weed still had plenty of seeds, but the earthy aroma and serious intoxicating effects, made old Mexican Brick weed second rate schwag. With better marijuana came more precise measurements.  The finger system was soon replaced with more scales, and soon we all became expert on the metric system. Around 1978, a new kind of cannabis occasionally became available. Sinsemilla, Spanish for seedless, was green and not brown and cost $100 per ounce or more.  Not having to remove the seeds before you smoked it was nice, but it was expensive and in short supply.

Our cannabis community has grown much in knowledgeable and sophisticated in the methods of production, processing and consumption of our favorite plant over the years.  We have seen domesticity grown cannabis explode in popularity and potency. We’ve seen indoor grow operations create an environment that fostered the cultivation of several superior strains of cannabis. Cannabis that originally came from the Hindu Kush regions or perhaps South America or Jamaica were brought here to America, and we grew and cross bred these strains until we produced the very best.

With the release of the Leira El Dorado Cannagar, we are at the zenith of cannabis quality and customer satisfaction.  If you are ever lucky enough to have El Dorado passed in your direction, I hope that you savior every moment.  As you take a slow draw, I encourage you to enjoy the opulence and smooth flavor and think about the first time you smoked weed, and celebrate just how far we’ve come.

Spring has finally arrived in Seattle, and the locals are beginning to come out from their winter roosts.  The Cinco de Mayo Weekend was the unofficial kick off of the summer season, with lots of local festivities, including the Seattle Cannabis Freedom March — very important to many of us in the cannabis community. 

Melissa Hysom, longtime medical cannabis activist and organizer of the Cannabis Freedom March, works tirelessly to organize this yearly iconic event. Activists from across the country travel to the Emerald City each year to march in support of cannabis legalization.

Outsiders may look at ‘legal’ Seattle wonder why we are still marching. Many aren’t aware of the real struggles that continue today.  I was pleased to have been asked to speak at this year’s event — and had the pleasure of following my very good friends and mentors, Vivian McPeak and John Davis.

I wasn’t nervous, as I speak to smaller groups each day at Diego Pellicer, as part of my role as greeter and spokesperson for the popular cannabis shop in Seattle and as  I lead Seattle Cannabis tour groups with Leila Ali, Tour Director at Kush Tours.

People from all over the world come to Jake the Professor to learn about cannabis. I make a point to tell my audience about the medicinal uses for cannabis, and relish the opportunity to demystify some myths they might have about cannabis.

I ask visitors to return to their state and tell their friends about what the hippie in Seattle taught them about Cannabis.

The Cannabis Freedom March is much the same, but bigger, and more dramatic. This yearly march was lead by some of the youngest activists in our community –Seattle Hempfest Volunteer, Morgan Davis and her friend Alyssa carried the traditional Freedom March banner.  Morgan is the daughter of longtime activist and entrepreneur John Davis, and truly represents the future of our movement and our community.

As I took the podium, I wanted my message to be simple and close to my heart.  I spoke about the need for unity in our industry. We sometimes forget that we all share the same struggles. Many of us do the exact same job as our competitors.  Our companies share similar ambitions, goals and visions for a legal, profitable future. With all that shared positivity, there really isn’t any need or space to speak negative about our competition.

This industry is growing at a much faster rate than when John Davis and I began Northwest Patient Resource Center (NWPRC) in 2011. Back then, as it is now, we learned the necessity of working together and not working against one another.  Now is a very sensitive time, we all need to come together as an industry with a unified message. We must stand for quality — quality products prepared by quality individuals.

Jake the Professor Weekend Unlimited-1As entrepreneurs we are driven to create the best products with integrity, with a sense of sustainability and accomplishment. Negative output about our competitors only distract us from being our best. The market will weed (no pun intended) out the companies and individuals who do not adhere to these principles.

I closed my speech by recognizing my mentors: Vivian McPeak, a good friend and Director of Seattle Hempfest, and John Davis — two better friends you could not find. I thanked them for championing my career, and helping me along the way.

I implored my audience not to spend time pointing out the problems of competitors.  The market will seek its own level. Those that offer less than what the market demands will go out of business naturally. They won’t need help from us to bring them down. They are already working hard at that. 

Perhaps the next time we find a crappy product or lousy gram of weed, we don’t write a three page review on Leafly of Facebook. Just scroll up!  You should be too busy creating your own dreams, anyway.  

Just be kind. Play nice with one another. All of us in the cannabis industry share the same struggles: struggles with LCB, struggles with partners, even struggles with employees. This business isn’t for everyone. Some companies will learn this in due time. 

Be patient. ‘Scroll up’ if you don’t like something, and ‘like and share’ if you do.  It brings out your best and puts you back on top!

I am so privileged to be able to attend some of the cannabis industry’s top events.  As a rule, Cannabis Industry professionals are eager to support of our industry, our peers,  and even our competitors to some measure. We attend events honoring outstanding individuals, and enjoy participating with our industry associations, like the MJBA and Cannabis Alliance. These grassroots events more often than not turn into a big party. We see the best events as happenings — reunions of industry leaders and professionals coming together to learn, celebrate and plan our next battle. 

As I mentioned in my last Cannabis Industry Ambassador-At-Large column, the Seattle 4/20 Celebrations were the most spectacular ever. It was a weekend unlimited in its grandeur to be sure.

The 4/20 weekend event was filled with fire (the kind that melts glass), and some things called Glory Holes and Kilns. There was plenty of open flames, with fire shooting from the torches used to shape and temper the glass.  The thing about Glass Artists is that they all move very quickly in a orchestrated chaos of fire. The nature of the glass artist is to move in a hurry. For one thing, the glass they are working with is extremely hot. From when we were children, we all learned to move fast when fire is involved.  But the main reason is that hot glass cools quickly, and must be shaped hot before it cools and won’t form correctly, or worse breaks.

The conductor overseeing the organized chaos of this active working industrial hot glass shop was Jerome Baker Design’s Jason Harris.   Jason invited artists from around the West Coast, who gathered Friday in a rented studio in the shadow of the Space Needle in a collaborative effort to build a 24-foot bong, nicknamed Bongzilla.

“Essentially this is the Freedom Bong,” head glass blower Charles Lowrie told me. Once assembled this larger-than-life Art Glass exhibit will displayed in Las Vegas at the new Cannabis Museum in July. It’s creators believe Bongzilla to be the world’s largest functional bong.

Our good friends from Cannabition were on hand with video cameras to document the scene. Also on hand were the local press, including The Seattle Times, KING 5, Northwest Leaf and DOPE Magazine.

One of the more interesting things I witnessed was a an artist who had lost his daughter when she died giving birth. He incorporated her ashes into a 24 foot memorial bong. It was quite moving for all of us who witnessed this.

Another highlight for me was when Chef Jeremy Cooper arrived with a couple of boxes of his delightful artisan chocolates. These delicately-crafted confections are made with the very best chocolate — and for this occasion were made with CBD and terpenes for a unique and effective product. They were a big hit and fit right in with Weekend Unlimited’s, unlimited weekend event.

The Dab Doctor was in the house, and really big impression with all who participated.  Accompanied by Chef Jeremy Cooper, the Dab Doctor showed up with a slab of shatter about the size of a pizza! In fact that’s how it was presented — in a large size pizza box. The Dab Doctor soon set up two electric dab rigs and we were Unlimited Dabbing all the do da day.

Many of the industry professionals I see routinely stopped by to get a gander of real Dale Chihuly style big glass art. There were a dozen glass artist actively working very hard for 12 hours strait four days in a row. If you are thinking about becoming a glass artist, start small. This “Big Glass” is definitely not for the beginner. Many of these professional glass artist work with Dale Chihuly. 

It was great to see so many industry friends turn out for the “Big Bongzilla Event.”  Everyone it turns out likes big bongs.  We even put one of the Giants on display at Diego Pellicer.  I call it “Big Green”.

Twenty22Many is a Washington-based Veterans group, born out of the old Medical Marijuana Collective model that preceded recreational cannabis in Washington State.

The mission of the Twenty22Many is “By All Means Necessary – End Veteran Suicide.” Founder Patrick Saint, and other volunteer veterans are committed to raising awareness about the extremely high suicide rates among our military veterans — it is reported that 22 daily suicides occur daily in America.

Patrick and his group of Veteran volunteers turned to Washington State’s newly licensed recreational cannabis community for help. Together, they created the Twenty22Many Veteran Support Depot Program to offer vets a safe haven and access to resources.

If a veteran walks through the door of a participating retailer in need of anything, they will be given a flyer with valuable contact information on it.  Once contacted, Twenty22Many will promptly dispatch a veteran volunteer and resources to that veteran in need.  Twenty22Many Veteran Support Depot Program essentially converts participating I-502 stores into little Veteran hubs all over the state.

I grew up in a military family. Both my father and a sister served in the armed forces, and so I was especially excited to join Twenty22Many at their annual fundraiser as a guest of the founder.  The auction was held at Heylo Cannabis Extractions in Sodo Seattle.

The evening started off with an art auction. The featured artist was Adream, whose work is so detailed and inspiring. These works were both colorful and spiritual in some mystical way — like DMT meet LSD.

I also attended a glass blowing event earlier, hosted by Weekend Unlimited, Jerome Baker Designs and Leafly. Jason Harris of JBD Glass graciously donated a wonderful JBD bong to Patrick and Twenty22Many for auction at the evening event.

I was given the extreme honor to present Patrick with a Challenge Coin. In the military, challenge coins are often offered to visiting dignitaries or guest of a unit or platoon.  This particular coin was given to me by Four-Star General “Skip” Dreps, a well-known Veterans advocate who works with the Disabled Veterans of the Pacific Northwest. General Dreps is a good friend of Jake The Professor who always jumps at the chance to help his fellow brothers in arms.

Meet Jake The Professor: Cannabis Industry Ambassador At Large

WASHINGTON: Jake Dimmock wears a lot of hats. Literally. He also juggles a lot of roles and responsibilities in Seattle’s cannabis community: posing with customers and VIPs as the face of swanky pot shop Diego Pellicer; making the scene as the well-dressed social media gadfly Jake the Professor, broadcasting his live reports from canna events large and small.

A seminal figure in Seattle’s cannabis scene – Jake was co-founder of Seattle’s best-known MMJ dispensary, Northwest Patient Resource Center (NWPRC), with John Davis, and a longtime patients advocate and caregiver long before pot was legal or fashionable.  When Washington migrated its medical marijuana dispensaries into the newly created I-502 adult use system, Jake transitioned smoothly serving as budtender extraordinaire first at Uncle Ikes, and later Diego Pellicer.

MJBA Cannabis Industry Ambassador at Large

With his vast knowledge of cannabis, his southern charm, his natural ease with people and multi-generational appeal, Jake the Professor was a natural to be named the first “Cannabis Industry Ambassador at Large” for the Marijuana Business Association (MJBA).  As the association for cannabis business’ first Ambassador at Large, Dimmock will represent the trade group at high profile events and functions.

On any given day, thousands tune in to watch Jake The Professor on Instagram – donning his sartorial splendor and brushing out his impressive white beard as the charismatic king of social media, the charming Southerner holds court from the retail floor at Diego Pellicer’s, as cannabis VIPs from former Presidents to PinUp Girls come by pay homage and get their photo snapped.

Dimmock has recently taken his act on the road, serving as host of Jerome Baker’s Bongzilla in Las Vegas during the recent Champs Show.

He has been approached to be the “face” of a number of legal cannabis products and is considering his options as legal cannabis expands coast to coast.
