How Do Musicians Choice Of Weed Strain Affects Their Music?

What do Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg have in common? Their own cannabis strains! See how Artists’ favorite weed strains connect with their music.

By Kate Patterson

Over the years, Denver, Colorado, has gained the reputation for being the biggest ‘reefer town’ in the U.S. The “Mile High City” certainly has had its share of celebrities coming in to visit and experience legal marijuana consumption.

But as the cannabis culture is crossing over to the mainstream world, local musicians along with famous American rock stars are heading to Colorado to create their own marijuana strains. How cool is that?

With 4/20 – the official stoner holiday – coming up in a few short weeks, 303 Magazine teamed up with Big Gigantic, Snoop Dogg, Trev Rich, GRiZ, Willie Nelson and Allman Brothers Band’s bassist, Oteil Burbridge to test out their very own cannabis bud.

If you’re curious to find out what type of experience you can get from these famous musicians strains, keep reading. We’ll also delve into what it was like to smoke their strains, while at the same time, listen to their very own music.

  • Musician: Willie Nelson
  • Genre: Country
  • Album: Wille and Family Live (Released 1978)
  • Name of Strain: Colin OG Strain (Indica)
  • Where To Buy This Strain: Diego Pellicer and LivWell Enlightened Health

The Inside Scoop: The initial scent that comes up when we lit up Colin OG was very distinct. It had a fruity smell that was very pungent. The smoke tasted a little bit sweet. If you like to smoke sweet strains, as opposed to the earthly ones, you’ll enjoy Colin OG for its berry fragrance.

Colin OG is an indica hybrid with a 70:30 indica/sativa ratio. In the initial stages of smoking, the indica effects were felt right away. It creates a body buzz and about halfway through, drowsiness creeps in. On the other hand, the sativa side to Colin OG is its mood-boosting effects. As the body buzz starts to make its way through, you feel uplifted and happy.

Now about relating it to Willie Nelson’s music. Since Colin OG is a dominant indica strain, listening to Nelson’s country ballad hits, “One Day At A Time”, “Crazy” and the “Red Headed Stranger Medley,” made you drift into a relaxing mood. Colin OG is meant for those who like to kick back, smoke and listen to the slow songs of Nelson’s laid-back Nashville twang.

Final Decision: Can you believe that Willie Nelson has been smoking weed for more than 60 years? He’s been noted for being the first country artist coming out of Nashville for smoking weed on stage and even advocating for its legalization since the 1960s.

In an April 2019 interview with Rolling Stone, Nelson called weed ‘the safest medicine.’ However, in December 2019, he has reportedly stopped smoking, since he is battling a serious case of emphysema.

But the legacy of Colin OG lives on as it’s still a popular strain sold on his brand site, Willie’s Reserve. If you’re a fan of Willie Nelson and cannabis, you got to get your hands on Colin OG. It’s for the smoker who likes to mellow out and listen to old country music. We’re sure that the man himself, Willie, would enjoy seeing you unwind and relax.

  • Musician: Willie Nelson
  • Genre: Country
  • Album: Willie and Family Live (Released 1978)
  • Name of Strain: Sour Diesel (Sativa)
  • Where To Buy This Strain: Bud Fox Enterprises LLC and LivWell Enlightened Health

The Inside Scoop: Although Colin OG lined up perfectly with Nelson’s Willie and Family Live album, his Sour Diesel bud doesn’t trail off too far.

Nelson’s e-commerce website Willie’s Reserve is popular for carrying strains with high THC content and potency, and Sour Diesel ranks high in those two departments.

In comparison to Colin OG, Sour Diesel is a sativa plant. It doesn’t give the punch of a body buzz like Colin OG does. With Sour Diesel, you won’t feel anxious. The scent is that of a mix of ‘skunky’ and sweet. A few puffs of Sour Diesel and it tastes earthy with a hint of lemon and berries.

This complemented the 1978 release of the Willie and Family Live album as it brought out a creative and introspective feeling. While I was listening to Nelson’s live album, I closed my eyes and transcended back to that time. I imagined myself sitting on the lawn, smoking a joint, while Nelson performed on stage with his guitar and singing his country tunes in his deep Southern drawl. I was swaying slowly to his country hits, “The Only Daddy That’ll Walk The Line” and “I Gotta Get Drunk.”

Final Decision: Even though Willie Nelson has reportedly stopped smoking weed in 2019 due to emphysema, do you think he wouldn’t have created a line of buds that didn’t complement his music? If you prefer sativa experiences that uplift your mood, smoke some Sour Diesel and turn up Nelson’s faster songs like “Uncloudy Day” and “I Gotta Get Drunk.”

Cheech & Chong: Still Rollin’—Celebrating 40 Years Of Up in Smoke Opening On 4/20

CALIFORNIA: Grammy-winning comedy duo Cheech & Chong will be the subject of a new exhibit opening at the GRAMMY Museum® on 4/20. Titled Cheech & Chong: Still Rollin’—Celebrating 40 Years Of Up In Smoke, the exhibit is curated in collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Lou Adler, who uncovered the legendary duo, produced many of their albums, and directed the film.

On display through spring 2019, the exhibit explores what made the world fall in love with East L.A. native Richard “Cheech” Marin and Canadian Tommy Chong, while chronicling the development and success of their first feature-length film, Up In Smoke. Items on display will include the original marked-up script from Up In Smoke, the master tape for the soundtrack album, comedy sketches, an assortment of limited-edition 40th anniversary smoking devices, and selections from Marin’s “Blazing Chicano Guitars” guitar-art collection, among other items.

As the first strictly counterculture comics, Cheech & Chong helped change the dialogue, and ultimately attitudes, about marijuana use. As recording artists, they utilized the studio much like musicians do—a place to improvise and experiment as they turned their comedy routines into full-length albums. They released an eponymous LP in 1971 featuring studio sketches including “Dave,” “Cruisin’ With Pedro De Pacas,” and “Trippin’ In Court.” The album’s 1972 follow-up, Big Bambú, peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album. The following year’s Grammy-winning Los Cochinos also charted at No. 2 and included the novelty hit “Basketball Jones.” These albums, and those that followed, served as a template for future comedy albums and stoner films.

“Cheech & Chong are arguably the quintessential comedy duo of the hippie generation,” said Scott Goldman, Grammy Museum Executive Director. “Individually, they’ve achieved great success, with Cheech becoming one of the most well-known and respected Chicano entertainers, and Tommy making his mark as an actor, writer, musician, and cannabis rights activist. Together, they became a voice for the counterculture, and to this day their hit film, Up In Smoke, is considered one of the best comedies of all time.”

Snoop Dogg To Speak At C2 Montréal 2018

CANADA: C2 Montréal is proud to announce that Snoop Dogg will be a speaker at the 7th edition of its flagship event, which will be held from May 23 to 25, 2018 in Montreal, Canada at the Arsenal. The artist turned entrepreneur will take centre stage in the Big Top to discuss his entrepreneurial vision for the cannabis industry. Joining Snoop Dogg for the talk is Ted Chung, a media entrepreneur and Snoop’s business partner at Casa Verde Capital and co-founder of Merry Jane.

Snoop creates opportunities in a new industry
Snoop is the founder of the venture capital firm Casa Verde Capital, which makes early-stage investments in startups in the ancillary cannabis industry. Casa Verde has funded several major marijuana ventures in the agtech, financial services, health, technology, media sectors, among others. One of Snoop’s recent high-profile investments includes $2 million in funding for Canadian cannabis inventory management company Trellis.

Building a cannabis content empire
Snoop’s sizeable entrepreneurial footprint, however, extends well beyond the venture capitalist aspect. He is also the co-founder of Merry Jane alongside business partner Ted Chung. Offering editorial content focused on marijuana news, politics, business and culture, Merry Jane speaks for and to the global mainstream cannabis community. Strategic brand partnerships (with the likes of VICE, MTV, Reddit, Complex and more) are key to the creation and sharing of original news and video content, such as VH1’s popular Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party TV series, featuring C2 Montréal 2016 alumni Martha Stewart.

With the impending legalization of marijuana in Canada, and the opening of the cannabis market in several jurisdictions across the U.S., Snoop Dogg has positioned himself as a leading voice on matters related to the business of cannabis.

NWA President Publicly Advocates Cannabis For Injured Wrestlers And Athletes

The President of the National Wrestling Alliance, attorney R. Bruce Tharpe, is one of the first sports leaders publicly advocating the use of cannabis as a legitimate medical alternative for injured wrestlers and other athletes.

“Too many people in the US have become victims of opioid addiction and death as a result of the over-prescription of pain medications and pharmaceuticals by doctors. Unfortunately, over the years we have seen a large number of untimely deaths as a direct result of prescription drug use, and many of those deaths may have been avoided had the medicinal use of cannabis been legalized and more widely accepted.

It is clear that cannabis / CBD has been used to successfully treat such afflictions as children suffering from epileptic seizures, PTSD in veterans who have served in Afghanistan and Iraq, cancer patients experiencing the severe nausea associated with chemotherapy, glaucoma patients and those who suffer severe pain due to arthritis, fibromyalgia, etc.

I think it’s important for the owners of legitimate sports franchises like the NFL, the NBA and the NBL and for sports entertainment groups like the WWE to stand up and take an honest look at cannabis as a legitimate form of alternative medicine.  The negative stigma of marijuana use needs to disappear in this country.  That’s why the National Wrestling Alliance is taking a progressive public position toward the advocacy of medicinal cannabis use by wrestlers and other athletes for the treatment of pain.”

The National Wrestling Alliance is the oldest and largest sanctioning body in professional wrestling, founded in 1948.

Trailer Park Boys Choose OrganiGram as Strategic Cannabis Partner

CANADA: OrganiGram Holdings announced that it has been chosen as the exclusive Canadian cannabis producer, business partner and brand developer for Nova Scotia-based Trailer Park Boys (“TPB”).

As part of the agreement, OrganiGram will work with the team at TPB Productions Ltd. to develop branding, packaging, and a competitive product portfolio targeted towards recreational marijuana consumers and distributed exclusively by OrganiGram. The deal also includes product placement opportunities as well as branding of peripheral cannabis items.

“This relationship solidifies one of our strategic building blocks as we plan for the legalization of recreational use in Canada. The team at Trailer Park Boys have an aligned vision to develop a National brand with our assistance and we’re incredibly excited at how the partnership will come to life,” said Ray Gracewood, Chief Commercial Officer at OrganiGram.

Trailer Park Boys have become a well-known name within the Canadian entertainment landscape since first appearing on air 1999. Following their agreement with Netflix in 2014, TPB audiences have expanded exponentially into the United States and beyond.

“We remain firmly committed to producing and supplying world-class cannabis for our increasing patient base; and we plan on maintaining that commitment in the future at OrganiGram. But we also need to be strategic about the opportunities that will be afforded to us with the advent of recreational use in Canada. Brands will play a key role within the cannabis market space, and we’re devoting the thought leadership and developing our strategy well in advance of these expected changes to ensure we’re prepared,” added Gracewood.

“We had been monitoring closely to best understand how we might be able to enter the cannabis space in Canada. After our initial meeting with the Maritime based executive team at OrganiGram, we all felt strongly that they were the perfect partner and the timing was right to move forward,” said Louis Thomas, President of Sonic Entertainment Group, representing TPB Productions Limited in this transaction.

The agreement, which has an initial term of five years, encompasses an exclusive product and branding partnership in Canada in exchange for consideration that includes a combination of cash royalties and other non-monetary consideration.

Stoner Icon Says Hemp Oil To Blame For Tumor

CALIFORNIA: Funnyman and stoner icon Tommy Chong is undergoing surgery to remove a tumour in his rectum in the hope it will end his painful battle with cancer.

The marijuana activist checked into the hospital in Los Angeles on Thursday shortly after appearing on US news show Access Hollywood Live, where he revealed he’s desperate to close out his longtime health issues.

Chong won his battle with prostate cancer in 2012, insisting pot suppositories were a miracle cure, but earlier this year the comedian was diagnosed with rectal cancer – and he believes the hemp oil he used to beat his first cancer may be the cause of his latest crisis.

“When you go into your orifice you’ve got to clinically know what you’re doing with it. I put suppositories up there and I don’t know how they did the oil and so on, and so now I found a laboratory where they test and they make sure that the oil that they give you to inject and everything else is pharmaceutically correct, it’s pure.

All Of These CEOs Have Admitted To Smoking Marijuana

Earlier this month, at the second Republican presidential debate, former Florida governor Jeb Bush admitted to smoking marijuana “40 years ago.” For those who remember former candidate Bill Clinton’s tortured claim that he had smoked pot but never inhaled, it’s a sign of how much the times have changed.

Medical marijuana is now legal in 23 states. In Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and the District of Columbia, you can legally toke up for purely recreational purposes. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, arrests for simple possession are on the rise, but otherwise, the drug has never been more mainstream.

Many current and former CEOs have come out in favor of either decriminalization or legalization. Microsoft’s Bill Gates and John Mackey of Whole Foods have both gone on the record to support legalization, and across the pond, Sir Richard Branson went so far as to say that given the opportunity to do so legally, he “would invest” in the marijuana industry.

Snoop Dogg Lights Up ‘Merry Jane,’ A Marijuana Lifestyle Content Site

Rapper-turned-tech-investor Calvin Broadus, better known as Snoop Dogg, is now a startup founder, too: he’s launching Merry Jane, a marijuana lifestyle site that he said will be “the encyclopedia to the cannabis world.”

Snoop laid out plans for Merry Jane on stage Monday at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference: the site will be a gathering place for everyone from those curious about cannabis to seasoned smokers and will feature things like original video content, including a series called “Deflowered,” where people get high and describe a new experience they had while enjoying marijuana.

As a budding venture capitalist, Snoop has already dabbled in investing in a few startups, usually with a focus on marijuana. His fund is called Casa Verde Capital and invested earlier this year in Eaze, an on-demand weed startup. He as also invested alongside actor Jared Leto in Robinhood, a free stock trading platform.
