Cheech & Chong: Still Rollin’—Celebrating 40 Years Of Up in Smoke Opening On 4/20

CALIFORNIA: Grammy-winning comedy duo Cheech & Chong will be the subject of a new exhibit opening at the GRAMMY Museum® on 4/20. Titled Cheech & Chong: Still Rollin’—Celebrating 40 Years Of Up In Smoke, the exhibit is curated in collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Lou Adler, who uncovered the legendary duo, produced many of their albums, and directed the film.

On display through spring 2019, the exhibit explores what made the world fall in love with East L.A. native Richard “Cheech” Marin and Canadian Tommy Chong, while chronicling the development and success of their first feature-length film, Up In Smoke. Items on display will include the original marked-up script from Up In Smoke, the master tape for the soundtrack album, comedy sketches, an assortment of limited-edition 40th anniversary smoking devices, and selections from Marin’s “Blazing Chicano Guitars” guitar-art collection, among other items.

As the first strictly counterculture comics, Cheech & Chong helped change the dialogue, and ultimately attitudes, about marijuana use. As recording artists, they utilized the studio much like musicians do—a place to improvise and experiment as they turned their comedy routines into full-length albums. They released an eponymous LP in 1971 featuring studio sketches including “Dave,” “Cruisin’ With Pedro De Pacas,” and “Trippin’ In Court.” The album’s 1972 follow-up, Big Bambú, peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album. The following year’s Grammy-winning Los Cochinos also charted at No. 2 and included the novelty hit “Basketball Jones.” These albums, and those that followed, served as a template for future comedy albums and stoner films.

“Cheech & Chong are arguably the quintessential comedy duo of the hippie generation,” said Scott Goldman, Grammy Museum Executive Director. “Individually, they’ve achieved great success, with Cheech becoming one of the most well-known and respected Chicano entertainers, and Tommy making his mark as an actor, writer, musician, and cannabis rights activist. Together, they became a voice for the counterculture, and to this day their hit film, Up In Smoke, is considered one of the best comedies of all time.”

Synopsis:

There’s a boom in medical marijuana dispensaries in the state of California and the U.S. These facilities have reached record numbers, cropping up like Starbucks or McDonald’s. States across the nation are legalizing medical and recreational marijuana. Our two unlikely heroes, Pat (DeRay Davis – “EMPIRE”, “21 Jump Street”, “GI Joe”) and Darius (Lil Duval – “Scary Movie 5″,”Meet the Blacks”), figure they can help the medical marijuana movement, but mainly help themselves by trying to grow their own cannabis and selling their crop to the dispensaries. Only one problem, knowing how to smoke marijuana doesn’t mean you know how to grow it.

After taking a trip to “Dr. Doobie” (Malcolm McDowell – “Entourage”, “The Mentalist”, “Home Alone”) to become legally certified growers, they gain access to a Bel Air mansion to use as a “grow house.” Although they convince Snoop Dogg (played as himself) to fund their operation, our heroes soon discover what can grow wrong, will go wrong in this comedy of errors.

Star Leaf Film Sponsors Cannabis Space Launch

WASHINGTON: The creators of the stoner alien sci-fi film “Star Leaf” are having a contest to promote a RocketStar space launch at NASA’s Cape Canaveral 39c Launch Pad in the coming weeks. The launch will be filmed by Discovery Channel Canada.

According to a recent article in Popular Mechanics, RocketStar technologies out of New York City have designed a single stage rocket capable of reaching orbital altitudes using its areospike engine technology. It hopes to lead the way in the new space economy, allowing anyone to put a small CubeSat Satellite into space for around $6,000 dollars.

The first launch will be a test to reach 10,000 feet in altitude. Star Leaf Enterprises is having a contest to decide what exactly should be put in the rocket as part of the test flight. Winners will receive Star Leaf autographed DVDs and merchandise. NASA will not allow any actual cannabis on the flight – but any item (cannabis-inspired only) under two ounces is allowed. Contest submissions can be tweeted to @starleafmovie on Twitter.

“It might sound silly to some, but the idea of being able to connect a concept in the film to something tangible in real life is amazing” says the film’s director, Richard Cranor.

Founder and CEO of RocketStar Christopher Craddock says the technology can eventually offer cannabis entrepreneurs future “space delivery” of their products to orbiting space stations, or orbital drops anywhere in the world in 20 minutes (where legal).

Whether the ability to launch “space weed” chalks up to anything more than a publicity stunt for cannabis companies and entrepreneurs or not, it still offers the public the opportunity to reach out to the cosmos as part of a booming new space industry being led by civilian and private contractors.

The film “Star Leaf” is about an extra-terrestrial strain of marijuana that lands on earth in the distant past. The film’s producers are excited to be a part of RocketStar’s early launch testing and realize the opportunity to have “ET Weed” in real life simply can’t be missed.

“Why not launch weed into space? It might prevent an invasion from an aggressive alien species. You never know.”
