After Five Days With Legal Pot, D.C. Poised To Ban Cannabis Clubs

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA:  After just five days of pot being legal the nation’s capital, the D.C. Council on Tuesday is poised to approve new limits on marijuana use, prohibiting smoking in bars, clubs and virtually anywhere else outside a private home that residents may gather to smoke the drug.

The legislation was introduced last week by Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D). Although she stood up to Congress and legalized marijuana over threats of jail time by House Republicans, Bowser immediately asked for the new curbs. She said they are needed to close a loophole in a voter-approved ballot measure that could allow clubs with membership fees and access to the drug to form.

Proponents of the ballot measure, known as Initiative 71, scrambled Monday to persuade lawmakers to table it. They said Bowser’s proposal was overly broad and sought to legislate a fix to a problem that does not exist – and may never.
