ASTM Call for Presentations Issued for 2023 Cannabis and Hemp Industry Events

January 27, 2023 by MJ News Network Leave a Comment

PENNSYLVANIA: ASTM International has issued calls for presentations for two upcoming events organized by its cannabis committee (D37).

The first of these, the Workshop on the Analytical Methods for Hemp Products as Animal Feed; How to Overcome Gaps in Matrices, Detectors and Quantifiable Limits for Regulators and Laboratories, will be held virtually from April 24 – 25, 2023.

The purpose of the workshop is to bring analytical chemists and regulators together to understand what analytes and levels of quantification are currently achievable for multiple matrices. Hemp as an animal feed is highly desirable by hemp producers and the pet and livestock industries. However, there are a limited number of methods approved to quantify trace amounts of cannabinoids in grain products. New methods and standards are needed as well as methods developed that can analyze the trace amounts of cannabinoids that may be transferred into animal tissues and animal by-products intended for human consumption, like meat, milk, and eggs.

For more on the workshop, including technical chair information, visit https://go.astm.org/animal-feed-workshop.

The second of these events, the Symposium on Contaminants in the Cannabis and Hemp Industry and Their Impact on Consumer Safety will be held virtually Oct. 10 – 12, 2023.

This symposium will provide a forum for evaluating the current evidence and gaps regarding the presence and measurements of contaminants that pose a risk to consumer health and safety in cannabis and hemp products with a focus on evaluating the sources of contamination (including cultivation, plant uptake, extraction, processing, manufacturing, packaging, and delivery, etc.) and how they can be mitigated.

For more on the symposium, including symposium chair information visit https://go.astm.org/D37-contaminants-symposium.

To participate in the workshop or the symposium, authors must submit a 2 to 3-page extended abstract using an appropriate template available from the Abstract Submission Portal. The deadline for the April workshop is Feb. 28, 2023, and for the October symposium, it is March 31, 2023. To ensure your abstract was received into the ASTM database, please email symposia@astm.org and let us know that you have submitted an abstract.

About the LCB Cannabinoid Science Work Group

The LCB has been working on developing policy related to the regulation of cannabinoids. Since Nov. 2020, the agency has worked with the cannabis industry, the Washington State Legislature, partner agencies and other states to better understand the science of the cannabis plant. The LCB has hosted a series of discussions related to products other than delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), engaged in rule discussions, and proposed legislation to address some of the issues arising since that time. The agency believes it would be beneficial to assemble a group of experts to have regular dialogue on the rapidly changing issues related to cannabinoids.

The objective of the CSWG is to collaboratively and transparently explore and build foundational understanding of the “plant of the genera Cannabis, as well as synthetic equivalents of the substances contained in the plant” (see RCW 69.50.204(c)(30)). The current CSWG Charter can be viewed here.

Highway Cannabis Launches Flagship Store in Marina del Rey with Grand Opening Event to Feature All Day Music and Arts Festival

January 12, 2023 by MJ News Network Leave a Comment

CALIFORNIA: Highway Cannabis Company announced its flagship store in Marina del Rey, CA is open and is celebrating with a Grand Opening event for the community featuring music, art and food vendors open to the public and of legal age on Saturday, January 28th, 2023.

“We are so excited to finally introduce the Highway Cannabis store concept to the public,” said Chris Colón, Highway Cannabis CEO and Founder.  “We spent the past two years designing and building a brand rooted in California lifestyle and a customer focused retail experience.  We have built the largest private label selection of products by partnering with some of the best cultivators and co-manufacturers in the state of California.”

In addition to introducing Highway’s own private label portfolio across all categories, Highway has also set out to curate a third-party assortment of the industry’s top brands and most innovative products, always leaving the customer wondering what they’ll find on their next trip. Paving the way to provide the finest California-grown craft cannabis flower and boasting the world’s largest eighth, a 4g eighth rather than the standard 3.5g, Highway’s hospitality offers even more bud for your buck.

Highway’s Hula Mamma and Highway Gummies lines of chef-driven recipes, small batch confectionary edibles that are precision-dosed, made with all-natural, vegan, gluten-free, and preservative-free ingredients, and feature customized formulations to fit your ideal cannabis experience.

The Highway Pre-roll product line offers a selection of Highway indoor flower, rolled in a variety of sizes, packaging options, and potency levels to compliment any occasion.

The beautifully designed store features an open hospitality-driven shopping experience. From the patent-pending aromatic atomizers at the Blossom Bar for flower enthusiasts to up close and personal exploration in the Scorpion Dab Bar for concentrate connoisseurs, putting the customer front and center.  A brand-new sleek design with a streetwear ethos and raw aesthetic incorporated throughout.

“Our overall store design pulls a lot of inspiration from streetwear and the outdoors. You can see that through our sleek and minimalistic style, complimented by a material palette which includes a lot of exposed metals, raw concrete, and warm woods,” said Matt Fosburg, VP of Retail.

The location has plenty of parking for shoppers and for express pick-up. An adjacent creative event space, formerly Box City and directly across from Costco, will open later in the year and be used as a space where local artists, craftsmen, entertainers, small businesses, and charities of the Westside community can hold events and showcase products.  To give back to the community, Highway is waiving rental fees for local artists and charitable organizations.

The grand opening event taking place on Saturday, January 28th takes place: 13452 Washington Blvd in Marina del Rey from 1-10 pm.  Music acts from Brainstory to Beaux Gris Gris and the Apocalypse perform in the evening and food trucks and immersive experiences take place throughout the day.

OLCC METRC Batch Tagging

METRC Batch Tagging

Currently, OLCC producers and medical growers reporting in METRC are required to use single-use RFID tags on all individual plants 36 inches or higher. OLCC staff have heard concerns regarding the cost of these tags, both in terms of the material cost as well as the labor cost of affixing and managing individual tags.

OLCC staff propose amendments to plant tagging requirements that would reduce the number of RFID tags required in order to balance accountability for reporting and compliance with lower costs for producer licensees and medical growers required to report in METRC.
