Digital marketing agency 420MEDIA and the Marijuana Business Association (MJBA) have joined forces to create a series highlighting entrepreneurs trailblazing the cannabis scene. Each week, we’ll profile a noteworthy business pioneer, and ask each 5 questions. This week’s featured trailblazer is Adelia Carrillo, CEO of Direct Cannabis Network
Tell us about your company
Direct Cannabis Network is the leading digital news network highlighting the latest tech, startups and innovative companies in the cannabis industry. DCN’s mission is to build an ecosystem for the entrepreneurial community that provides a voice for the startups, a platform for the professionals and a community for the entrepreneurs.
Why did you choose the cannabis business?
Honestly, I never knew I could or would have a career in the cannabis industry. My path was leading me towards a successful career in the consumer electronics industry. However, life has a funny way of working out and cannabis found me. It found me and helped me physically and emotionally during a time when my health needed it the most. During my transition as a patient, I became curious about the areas that interest me, which were tech, entrepreneurship and startups. I couldn’t relate to the resources available and saw a real need for an ecosystem catering to the entrepreneurs, startups and innovation. That was when the idea began evolving and we launched a test pilot in 2015 to see if DCN was something people would resonate with and now here we are today.
What change will your first address in this industry? Does it address an unmet need?
When looking at DCN, there are many things I see us addressing however the two that were the main points for DCN were the following: I wanted DCN to be able to make sure we didn’t lose the heart of this industry. I wanted to make sure the DCN continued to share WHY people have believed in this plant for so long, why people have risked their lives for it, and why people left amazing careers and moved their families for this plant. As cannabis turned into an industry, there is a lot that has and will continue to change, but I believe we have the opportunity to make this industry better than any other industry out there and a bit part of that will be because we don’t forget the WHY and we don’t forget the history or the OG’s along the way.
The second reason was to build a community for these new entrepreneurs and startups, I wanted them to have a trusted resource and ecosystem, where business owners can connect, learn and grow together. This industry is going ahead some big industries and by us working together and building the foundation together we can make sure we continue to allow the opportunity for even the small businesses, farmers and startups to continue to grow.
I am honored to say the reaction has been positive and very welcoming. It amazes me to see something that started in my bedroom evolve into a global ecosystem. Even with us still as a startup, and with no marketing budget, we have been able to continue to grow and evolve. To be it shows proof that DCN is needed and as we continue to grow our audience, it allows me to learn their pain points so we can continue to learn how to provide them with offerings and opportunities that can help them succeed.
Are there any upcoming milestones for your company?
We have quite a few milestones we are looking to reach this year and a few that I am excited about are: we finally released our membership which we are proud of that offers amazing opportunities for our B2B audience, we also are finally able to expand our team- we are now looking at bringing in sales team members and hire a few more internal roles, and we also are looking to reach 20k subscribers.
