Digital marketing agency 420MEDIA and the Marijuana Business Association (MJBA) have joined forces to create a series highlighting entrepreneurs trailblazing the cannabis scene. We’ll ask each of these industry pioneers the same 5 questions. For our first profile, we travel to Virginia Beach to speak with Kelly Sheffer, founder of Whiteseed Bioceuticals.
1. Tell us about your Company
Whiteseed Bioceuticals is a women-owned, small batch, CBD oil supplement company located in Virginia Beach, VA. The company was founded with the mission of educating and providing people with high quality, all-natural CBD oil products and supplements. When I was personally searching for a product for myself for anxiety and pain, I was completely overwhelmed with what I found on the internet. I talked to many people that said the same thing, they wanted to try something, but didn’t know where to start. I have owned/co-owed several medical companies over the years, and I felt like the best way to provide myself with a high-quality product I could trust, was to create my own brand. People want to buy from people they can trust and relate to, my goal is to connect with people on a personal level, plant the seed and let it grow from there.
2. Why did you choose the cannabis/hemp business?
I chose the cannabis/hemp business for several important reasons. I have spent nearly my entire adult career in pharmaceutical/medical sales, directly responsible for driving sales and increasing utilization. I have seen first hand the good and the bad that can result in the use of pain and psycho-active pharmaceuticals professionally and personally, with family members who have succumbed to addiction. A huge turning point, is when I became a mother and I was on the other end, a mom asked to medicate her son, and I was not ok with it, after all those years of selling it. I just want people to make informed decisions, and to weigh their options and to know that there are natural alternatives to address pain, anxiety and other common disorders that greatly effect quality of life.
3. What change will your firm address in the industry? Does it address an unmet need?
I love the fact that people are taking more control in regards to what they are putting in their bodies. From the foods we eat, the water we drink the medications that we are told are safe and effective. It doesn’t matter what religion, race, socio-economic background you are from, all people are becoming empowered to seek out the truth and to decide for themselves how they want to move forward with treatment for a particular condition or disease. I work in end-of-life care, I see everyday how small acts of kindness and love by just one person, can affect so many. Every day, there is a new opportunity for me to share with people what CBD oil is, how not all CBD oil products are the same and the importance of taking an appropriate dose or strength for what symptom you are trying to treat. It’s been this little snowball that is getting bigger and bigger, it’ been fun watching it grow.
4. What has been the reaction to your product/service/technology?
It has been overwhelmingly positive, people kind of think they know what CBD oil and supplements are and how they work, but most do not. I am in a very conservative area in the south, some people even call me and tell me, please don’t tell my husband I am buying this. 100% of the time, after a consultation, people are just extremely surprised, empowered and most importantly excited to share what they have learned. I have to say, especially woman, we want to help others, when we find something that works, we want others to know about it. Woman talk about their stress, their lack of energy, because they can’t sleep, the guilt we feel, because we are not present in the moment. When I get a call and someone told me they are less anxious, and feel more engaged with their family, that they have slept through the night for the first time in 15 years, then Whiteseed Bioceuticals is already a huge success.
5. Are there any upcoming milestones for your company?
I feel like everyday brings a new milestone, I had my first consultation with a 92-year-old, who now wants me to talk to her church group. I just had an hour-long conversation with a 24-year-old who is battling Lyme disease and I learned a ton from him! CBD oil has helped him tremendously and that has now opened some doors and opportunities in that community. I am reaching a point, where I can hire someone to help me, and that is an amazing feeling.
